Match Report
The first meeting against local rivals Putford was played in wet & windy conditions at Parkham. Buckland started the more lively with Simon Leach powering a shot over the bar within the opening couple of minutes. Ed Jonckheere raced down the wing on ten minutes and his ‘cross come’ shot from 20yds drifted over the keeper to put the visitors ahead. The same player received the ball direct from a throw-in 5 minutes later and as the Putford defence stood still he smashed a shot into the net. The linesman and home players thought the Buckland striker was offside, but the referee, quite correctly, awarded the goal, as a player can not be offside direct from a throw-in. Within minutes Putford clawed a goal back as a mis-hit shot caught the Buckland keeper napping and just dropped over the line inside the far post. As the half progressed Buckland began to create the more frequent and clear cut chances. Simon Adams on two or three occasions raced clear of the defence only to see his shots well saved by the keeper. With the half time break fast approaching Vinny Bott scored from close range following a corner.
Once again during the half time team talk the Manager impressed upon his players the need for concentration in the early stages of the second half. The team responded by not conceding in the early stages and in fact increased their lead as full back Rob Barnard scored his first goal for Buckland, a tap in from close range, following a corner after 15 minutes. Lack of concentration minutes later allowed Putford to snatch a goal, as a long shot was deflected past a stranded Buckland keeper. With legs tiring in the muddy conditions, the visitors made two substitutions. Within minutes Simon Adams raced down the wing and crossed for recent substitute Danny Woolf to slide the ball past the keeper for goal number five. Only a couple of minutes later Simon Adams was put clear by the impressive Ed Jonckheere and struck a firm shot into the far side of the net to stretch the visitors lead. The victory was completed late in the game as Gary Montague prodded the ball over the line following a goal mouth melee.
