Match Report

With no referee allocated to the game, Bratton Fleming were sporting enough to allow Buckland’s John Adams to take the whistle in order for the match to proceed. The home side started well scoring two goals within the opening 15 minutes. Danny Woolf and Simon Leach both hitting the back of the net to put Buckland in control. Midway through the half the visitors managed to break down the home defence and score with a good shot from 10yds which just sneaked under the dive of Danny Barnes. Within minutes a firm header from Danny Woolf was dropping into the net when a defender punched the ball onto the post and into the net. The goal was not given as the referee had already blown for handball before the ball crossed the line. A penalty kick was subsequently awarded to Buckland. Danny Woolf’s spot kick was well saved by the keeper. Justice was seen to be done two minutes later as the same player smashed a shot from 18yds into the top corner of the net to put the home side two goals clear.

Only seven minutes into the second period Danny Woolf completed his hat-trick following a fine run and cross from Simon Adams. With the score at 4 – 1 Buckland seemed to take their ‘foot off the gas’ for a good 15 minutes, in which time the visitors scored two further goals to close the gap to 4 – 3. The home side were feeling the pressure as temperatures rose. Bratton Fleming were awarded a penalty for a trip just inside the box, but the resulting spot kick was brilliantly saved low to his left by Danny Barnes. Buckland lifted their game from this point and within minutes Danny Woolf struck once again from close range to increase Buckland’s slender lead. The visitors found themselves under continuous pressure with Buckland peppering the goal with shots. The visitors subsequently had a player sent off for a second handball offence with 15 minutes remaining. The game was effectively killed off with 4 minutes remaining as Simon Adams smashed a shot against the crossbar and post and although the keeper smothered the rebound, the ball was deemed to have crossed the line.
