Match Report

The home side would have been crowned second division champions if a victory over Buckland was forthcoming. This looked likely as a shot from 20yds within the opening 5 minutes, rattled the Buckland crossbar. Within 15 minutes the home side subsequently edged ahead with a goal following a free-kick. The Grosvenor centre forward reaching the resulting cross and neatly guiding the ball into the net from 10yds. During the next 15 minutes the home side appeared nervous and hesitant in defence, which gave Buckland the opportunity to press forward. A penalty was awarded to Buckland for hand ball midway through the half, but the Grosvenor keeper made a good save from Matt Cann’s spot kick. The visitors continued to upset the rhythm of the home side’s game and were rewarded for their efforts after 30 minutes as Ed Jonckheere hit a firm shot from 12yds which the keeper managed to save with his legs. The rebound was collected by Jonckheere who subsequently smashed a thunderous shot into the roof of the net to bring Buckland level.

The second period saw chances at both ends in the early exchanges, but as the game progressed the midfield players held the greater possession and scoring opportunities seemed at a premium. The final 15 minutes came to life as Buckland seemed to find another gear and placed the home defence under constant attack. Simon Adams and Simon O’Dell both had good shots that the Grosvenor keeper did exceptionally well to save. With 8 minutes to play a cross was poorly headed clear by the home defence, only to be knocked straight back into the goalmouth and bundled over the line by Simon O’Dell. The delight of the visiting players was short lived as within 3 minutes Grosvenor were awarded a free kick just outside the Buckland penalty area. As the referee was lining up the Buckland defensive wall a Grosvenor player smashed the free-kick directly into the goal. The referee, to the total disbelief of the Buckland players, allowed the goal to stand.

Man of the Match: Simon O’Dell (striker)
