Match Report

Last seasons Division Two champions gave Buckland a lesson in finishing during the opening half as the goals flew in from every angle. The initial 10 minutes were evenly contested with both sides creating goal scoring opportunities. Once Dolton had opened the scoring on 12 minutes, their tails were up and Buckland’s defence suffered as the lively strikers began to score almost at ease. On 30 minutes, with Dolton having scored four times, Buckland were awarded a free-kick 10yds inside their own half. Matt Cann hit the resulting dead ball deep into the opposition penalty area. So far in fact, that the ball eluded everyone, including the keeper, to finish in the back of the net. Unfortunately, the referee had indicated an indirect free-kick and the goal did not stand. Buckland, from this point onwards, were willing the half time break to arrive, but not before the visitors had recorded two further goals.

For the start of the second half, Buckland made a couple of substitutions. Matt Bettiss and Leon Appleton came into the action and team captain Vinny Bott replaced the injured Matt Cann in central defence. The home side seemed to gain a better grasp on the game and slowly stemmed the constant Dolton pressure. Midway through the half Ed Jonckheere managed to put the ball into the Dolton net, but the goal was disallowed for off-side. Two further goals for Dolton and several controversial decisions kept the final 20 minutes interesting for the spectators.

Man of the Match: Vincent Bott (defender) and Ed Jonckheere (striker)
