Match Report

A glorious sunny afternoon and bone hard pitch seemed more appropriate to cricket than football, but at least the supporters could soak up the sun. The home side began well attacking right from the kick-off and posed Buckland problems in the early stages as the lively Woolsery youngsters pushed forward. Slowly the visitors settled into their stride and although 3 regular players were missing from the line-up the team still held the greater possession during the opening half. Scoring opportunities fell to Jake Lomax, his shot midway through the half being well saved by the Woolsery keeper. Simon O’Dell constantly caused the home defence problems and a couple of long distance efforts from Simon Adams and John Stanton once again kept the keeper busy. Woolsery always looked dangerous on the counter attack, but poor finishing let the home side down on a couple of occasions. With less than 5 minutes to the break a deep cross from Steve Bennett found Vinny Bott 8yds from goal, his header just crept inside the far post to put Buckland ahead.

The second half was very competitive with both sides challenging hard for every ball. Buckland always seemed to have the edge with the industry of Vinny Bott and the passing of Simon Adams constantly probing the Woolsery defence. Midway through the half a good cross from Ed Jonckheere once again found the head of Vinny Bott who made no mistake from 6yds. As the game entered the latter stages injuries forced Buckland to bring all their substitutes into the action. In fact two players, Matt Horn and Ian Hayter were both making their first appearances of the season. The game became disjointed in the last 15 minutes as several of the young Woolsery players lost their composure and found themselves in the referee’s book.

Man of the Match: Vinny Bott (midfield) & Simon Adams (midfield)
